Flap Operation, Free Gingival Graft-SDG- Operation
Gum surgeries are surgical interventions applied in advanced gum diseases. These types of procedures come into play when standard cleaning methods are insufficient. The aim is to eliminate inflamed tissues, protect the tooth and surrounding bone tissue and restore oral health. Procedures such as flap operation and free gingival graft (SDG) stand out among these surgical treatments.
Flap operation is an intervention performed to clean infected tissues in deep pockets formed due to gum disease. In this procedure, the gum is carefully lifted, the underlying root surface and bone tissue if any are cleaned. After cleaning is completed, the gum is placed back in place and fixed with stitches. The healing process is usually fast and a significant improvement is achieved in the gums after the procedure.
Free gingival graft is a surgical procedure applied in cases of gum recession or when the gum is too thin. In this procedure, healthy tissue usually taken from the palate area is transplanted to the area where recession has occurred. The graft supports and strengthens the gum tissue in this area over time by adhering to it. SDG both improves aesthetic appearance and protects the tooth against future recessions.
After both procedures, mild pain, swelling or sensitivity may occur. These conditions can be easily managed with painkillers and antiseptic solutions recommended by the doctor. Soft foods should be preferred for the first few days, very hot-cold foods should be avoided. Stitches are usually removed within a week and the healing process is followed with regular check-ups.
Neglected gum problems can cause tooth loss and systemic health problems over time. Flap and graft operations help prevent these problems by protecting oral health both functionally and aesthetically. These procedures performed with the expertise of Dr. Dt.
